Emerge Australia is the leading charity in Australia offering support, advocacy and information to people affected by Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, commonly known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). Since 1980 we have been working to increase awareness and recognition of this poorly understood and under-researched condition. ME/CFS is a complex, multi-system, neuro-immune condition with a multitude of symptoms related to the dysfunction of: o The brain o Gastro-intestinal system o Immune system o Endocrine and cardiac systems ME has been classified as a neurological disorder by the World Health Organisation since 1969. Despite this, the condition is still poorly understood by the medical and research community. Misunderstanding and lack of research leaves people with ME/CFS isolated and vulnerable to misdiagnosis. Patients are often financially insecure and as they are unable to work many live in poverty. It is fundamental to the well-being of those impacted by ME/CFS that the condition is more widely recognised to facilitate enhanced availability and access to effective diagnosis, treatment and management.
