MGEF’s mission is to improve the literacy, health and economic well-being of Maasai women and their families through the education of girls, women, and their communities. To achieve our mission, MGEF concentrates on two long-standing complementary programs -- our Scholarship Program which provides schooling to girls who would otherwise be unable to attend, either because of poverty or cultural beliefs that deny girls an education, and our Community Education Program which conducts Life Skills Workshops (LSWs) and Women’s Business Training (WBT) Workshops. Since MGEF’s founding as a 501(c)(3) in 2001, we have provided educational scholarships to 283 Maasai girls who have achieved outstanding graduation rates. We have 107 alumnae, most with post-secondary degrees who are now empowered Maasai women and who actively give back by helping organize and facilitate our programs. Over 17,000 Maasai children and adults, and 330 women, have attended MGEF’s LSWs and WBT Workshops, respectively. MGEF works in close coordination with our MGEF-Kajiado Office, a Kenya-certified Community Based Organization. MGEF-Kajiado, located in the town of Kajiado, is staffed by Maasai women and supported by a Board of Directors (all Maasai women), many local volunteers and deep community backing. MGEF has implemented a model program based on community participation, strong financial controls, cultural sensitivity and good governance.
