Mission Statement (2023)

The mission of the Washington Ferret Rescue and Shelter (WFRS) is to ensure the safety and the well-being of all ferrets. We care for the abandoned, lost or surrendered ferrets until they are adopted, placed with loving foster families or until they pass at the shelter. We provide education and support to owners and prospective ferret owners. We are a no-kill shelter, and only humanely euthanize if no medical care can alleviate the condition, pain and suffering. We provide education about the domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) to the public.

WFRS is a 501(c) 3 non-profit, all-volunteer organization that provides education, rescue and shelter about and for ferrets. It relies completely on sponsors, donations, volunteers, grants and contributions from the public. We are one of the oldest, and we are the largest ferret rescue in the US.

It is a sad fact that not all ferrets that are obtained from pet stores, breeders, will remain in the same family for their lifetime. Allergies, landlords, financial problems, neglect, sickness are just a few reasons why people must place their ferrets in shelters, rescues. Most animal shelters will not take in ferrets and if they do try to find a ferret rescue, shelter and cannot, they euthanize them. Without generous, caring sponsors, individuals as yourselves we would not be able to provide and care for all the ferrets that have come into the rescue the past two years. Your generosity, help, will ensure that our rescue will be able to continue to provide for all ferrets in need of our love.

Please keep in mind that any amount of contributions can save many ferrets lives in hopes of someday being adopted into a good home. Ferrets suitable for adoption are usually placed within two weeks of arrival. All potential adopters are screened to assure a good match-up.
