About us
With 150 years of history, the Victorian Artists Society (VAS) remains one of Australia’s oldest and preeminent art institutions. It is unique in its long history of being founded by and for artists, with its beginnings in 1870 when a group of impressionist artists met in St Kilda, Melbourne to form the original artist collective. The bluestone building was first opened in 1874 and still serves both as a studio and a reminder of our history and humble beginnings. The recently restored gallery has become iconic and continues its legacy of providing a meeting place for all artists and art lovers to exhibit, study and appreciate art.
