This organization provides sanctuary to older and managably disabled horses. We believe that humanity takes everything from horses, from the minute they are born, putting them to work in often dangerous and always physically demanding ways. If our requirements hurt or disable a horse, or if in the course of time age alone makes them unable to meet our needs, they are often disposed of in a variety of risky, and nasty ways including auction (ending up most often with kill buyers), neglect, or handing them over to inexperienced homes that literally work them to death. And The Golden Carrot tries to provide an alternative. A chance to be a horse, with horses. Their special needs are met as much as we can, but we find a mere chance to live in a herd, and interact with their own kind has an almost magical effect. We are a bare bones operation, and take no extreme measures to extend life, but do provide veterinary and farrier expertise as needed, good nutrition, and some shelter from the elements, and day long interaction with their own kind. We take horses from owners, primarily, but have also relieved fellow rescues of their unadoptables, leaving them room to take in more, and worked with Animal Services as well. We need the help of the public to feed and care for these horses.
