About us
New Zealand's use of land combined with introduced invasive pests and diseases have caused our indigenous ecosystems and species to be in a state of rapid decline. We have around 4000 species threatened or at risk of becoming extinct. This means we could lose more than 80 per cent of our reptiles, frogs, bats and birds. 59 of our bird species have disappeared since humans first arrived here. We continue to lose fundamental ecosystems and habitats like tussock grasslands, sand dunes, indigenous scrub land and indigenous forests.
The Takaka Hill Biodiversity Group Trust is a community group restoring and protecting the unique limestone/marble ecosystems on Takaka Hill where we live. The Indigenous biodiversity found on Takaka Hill is found nowhere else in the world, like the giant carnivorous land snail Powelliphanta hochstetteri, the Nelson Green Gecko and the South Island Robin. With a project area of over 4500 ha our group is restoring and protecting Takaka Hill ecosystems through pest plant control (wilding pines are a focus), predator control (rats stoats and possums) and feral goat control. We want to ensure that the world doesn't lose the incredible species that make Takaka Hill and New Zealand the incredible place it is for our children, your children and future generations who come to our shores to experience and connect with our natural world.
