Supporting South West Blood Bikes

South West Blood Bikes is a volunteer-led charity providing a vital, free-of-charge medical courier service across Devon. We proudly support all four main hospitals in the county—alongside community hospitals and hospices—under formal service level agreements with Devon’s three major NHS Trusts. We also represent Devon as part of the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes.

Founded in Plymouth in 2018 by just three volunteers, our charity has grown to include over 100 dedicated individuals—riders, drivers, coordinators, fundraisers, and admin support—operating from four regional hubs: Plymouth, Exeter, Torbay, and Barnstaple.

We run 365 days a year, primarily out of hours, and in East & South Devon, we provide a 24/7 service depending on volunteer availability. Every journey we make is completely free for the NHS and hospices we serve, saving them over £800,000 in transport costs since our charity was formed. As part of the association we work with other association members to relay urgent samples and medical items across the United Kingdom.

We receive no government funding or payment from our service users, and have no paid staff. Our work is powered entirely by the generosity of the public and the passion of our volunteers—the true lifeblood of our charity.
