Short’s Fawn Rescue (SFR) provides life-saving services to displaced, injured and orphaned fawns. Why is this needed? With human expansion steadily destroying wildlife habitat, more and more animals are being injured and killed as a result of being forced to live amongst us. Adults and babies alike are hit by cars, entangled in fences, mauled by dogs, etc. It seems only appropriate that we should provide assistance to those whom we have caused harm. Last year we received over 3000 calls, and aided in the rescue of more than 200 fawns. As we become more widely known, we need to develop ways to cut costs and become more sustainable. One way is to generate our own feed. We have the property, but need the equipment to work the land and grow the crops necessary. The cost of formula, feed, medical supplies and veterinary services, as well as the equipment required (incubators, recovery stalls, quarantine areas, shelters, pens, etc.) is very expensive. There is no monetary compensation from state or federal sources for what we do. Without the kindness and generosity of caring people, the work we do would simply not be possible.
