A Perfect Foundation established an Education and Conservation Centre in the village of Mapadeget in North Sipora in February 2015 and we have been working together with the local community to help reduce plastic waste ever since. Some of our accomplishments so far include:
- Developing the first recycling and waste management program in the Mentawai Islands which includes sending bundles of plastic waste back to the mainland to the Recycling Centre.
- As of 2017 taught over 400 adults and children English language skills providing better employment opportunities for their future.
- Taught 30 female students how to surf along with essential water awareness skills.
- Distributed water filters in remote villages in partnership with Waves4Water.
- Introduced an outreach program with local schools promoting English and sustainability.
- Secured land to build a new community based Education and Conservation Centre to accommodate our growing programs and the new recycling collection facility.
- Formed relationships with local government officials and community leaders who support our programs and the need for a sustainable future.
With the prediction that there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans by 2050, the world is becoming increasingly aware of the problem with our use of plastic and its impact on the health of our planet.
Indonesia produces a staggering 3.2 million metric tons of mismanaged plastic waste per year and is the world’s second largest contributor to plastic rubbish in the oceans. In 2015, the Indonesian Environment and Forestry Ministry’s waste management director wanted to declare a state of emergency for waste in the country due to the extent of the crisis.
A Perfect Foundation realizes that the time is NOW! We need to collectively take proactive action to protect this unique marine and forested environment. By doing so, we can ensure future generations inherit at least some of the lush beauty that once was more than the rarity it’s become today.
With expanding land-based tourism, our joint aim with this community is to ensure they have the skill sets to play an active role in shaping a sustainable future, which you can be a part of too!!
It costs over $65k a year to run the Mentawai Education and Environmental Centre which includes operational costs, running the various programmes, wages and rent. This Giving Circle is going to do it’s part and contribute to the annual rental costs of the school which are $15k a year as well as assisting in our new school build which has been pushed back until 2018 due to insufficient funding. It only needs around 50 people to join and make this happen. Will you join us?
As the sponsor of this Good Cause our Giving Circle will:
- Be recognised as an official sponsor of the school including having the name of our Giving Circle proudly displayed on the building!
- Receive quarterly updates on how our money is being used and how it’s helping to change lives.
- The ability to communicate and interact directly with the project facilitators on the ground
- The opportunity to visit or volunteer at the Education and Conservation Centre – a once in a lifetime experience

Well with the Education and Conservation Centre currently closed for holidays and allowing our Project Coordinators Tom and Karen to have a well-earned break back in the UK, we can reflect on the amazing work we have been doing over the past 6 months!! So far this year we have recognized World Earth Day, World Oceans Day and World Environmental Day all which make our recycling and waste management efforts so much more rewarding knowing we are doing our part in this paradise mecca of the world. If we don't collaborate on a global scale, how many of these small pockets of paradise will there still be to enjoy or for the next generation to enjoy?
With this also comes the ongoing education, and the English learning program is just as essential to be part of the growing tourism industry throughout these islands and continuing to make a sustainable difference for these communities for years to come.
We also have some amazing news to share and that is securing our very first Platinum Sponsorship Member with a AUD$20,000 donation to assist with building our new multi-purpose Centre!! We are so excited for this new partnership and look forward to working together with local businessman John Waitzer who has his own lodge nearby, and knows the challenges associated with recycling in these areas. We now just need the additional funding to purchase the land and we can make this happen during 2017!! If you know of anyone that would be interested in making this happen before EOFY let me know so we can make contact with them!

Happy New Year Everyone!!
Well end of 2016 saw us launch our new plastic waste recycling programme ‘Bank Sampah’ which is one of our biggest roles that we'll be focusing on this year. We have been holding beach clean ups and explaining to the community what can and can’t be recycled. It has been really rewarding and encouraging to see young kids bringing us plastic waste, cleaning it and asking questions about our new programme. We also took our plastic recycling programme, to the local High School to spread the word. With education at its core, getting young people involved is key for the sustainability of the programme. We had lots of fun with an interactive workshop which included a presentation, activities, games, videos and even a little skit!
Let’s hope this is just the start of something amazing!!
The school closed over the Christmas period so our full time teachers could take a well earned break, and the students got into the festive spirit donning their Santa hats for a bit of pre-festive fun!!
We are slowly progressing raising the funding to purchase land and building a new multi-purpose Education and Conservation Centre, so please help spread the love and share this giving circle to your network of friends, family, colleagues etc.
Watch this space as we start a new term full of learning and exciting activities planned for the students, with further updates coming soon!!

Wow what a busy few months we have been having at the school!! We would not be able to continue running these amazing programmes without your ongoing support and funding which is clearly evident in these photos.
In September we had a load of books donated and delivered from family and friends of TPW, so the students now have their own little library and bookshelf which they absolutely love which they can practice their new English skills!!
Woohoo - Watch this space!! Future world leaders, in the making!! If Donald Trump can, these kids have a good chance!!
