Being Funded by Perfect Wave Giving Circle

The Mentawai Education and Conservation Centre provides English education and environmental programmes for 210 students a year - some of the poorest and most disadvantaged in Indonesia. Our Giving Circle helps with the annual rental for the current school, as well as contributing towards building our new school in 2017. We only need 50 people to join this circle and donate to make it happen. Can you join us?

A Perfect Foundation is a Non-Profit Organisation created to empower local communities in remote surf regions through education and skill acquisition to make a sustainable difference. Founded by The Perfect Wave Surf Experience, we wanted to be able to give back to the island communities that have allowed us to enjoy their natural resources and homelands.

Through collaboration and direct support we are dedicated in assisting any way we can with the wants and needs of the local communities, while learning from them at the same time. A Perfect Foundation supports multiple programs through initiatives and fundraising for other established charities in these regions as well as our own community based collaboration centre in the Mentawai. This way we are able to make a direct difference where and when it is needed through hygiene, clean water, education, skill acquisition and environmental programs.

We can all make a difference, and through caring and collaboration we have the power to connect with people from many diverse cultures and create positive experiences.

It costs over $65k a year to run the Mentawai Education and Conservation Centre including operational costs, wages and rent.  This Giving Circle is going to do it’s part and contribute to the annual rental costs of the school which are $15k a year as well as assisting in our new school build for 2017.  It only needs around 50 people to join and make this happen.  Will you join us?

English Teaching Programmes at the Education Centre

As a response to the request of the local community, we offer English classes to the local people, particularly the younger generation. Classes are offered to anyone willing to learn and enjoy a safe learning environment, where their needs are catered for through carefully differentiated planning. With population growth, development of the region and the predicted increase of tourism coming to the islands, we are providing these remote communities with valuable access to English skills offering them an opportunity to develop sustainable initiatives.

The Mentawai Islands is one of the most consistent surf destinations in the world. Our founding company, The Perfect Wave Surf Experience, represent many quality surf charters and surf resorts/lodges in this area and send hundreds of happy surfers here every season. All of these operators seek to employ local Mentawai people provided they have the qualifications, with strong English Language being one of the major skills required.

Surfing and Water Awareness

Surfing is a big part of the community in the Mentawai Islands, however women rarely participate due to inequality and lack of confidence. At the centre we run surf classes for girls and young women offering them an opportunity of gaining a life changing skill. The joy and empowerment these women are gaining from a previously male dominated sport is immense. Students also learn about rips, currents, tides and dangers associated with the sea. Through surfing, they are fostering a love, understanding and respect for their ocean environment.

Estimates suggest three times as many women than men died in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami in Asia, with one major factor being the majority of women were lacking the education on how to swim.

Environment Awareness

As part of our Environmental Program, we are focusing on supporting the Bank Sampah Siput Bisa (Rubbish Bank) program to help it become a successful and sustainable recycling scheme. The main objective of this program is to reduce plastic waste being dumped and polluting the environment, the air and the ocean by encouraging and educating community members to manage their household rubbish.

As part of this initiative, we organise various activities with our local community, such as beach cleans, art competitions, video campaigns, and workshops. This provides an opportunity to educate young people about the impact of littering their environment while also gaining an insight into the growing problem of waste disposal on the island.

The foundation is aiming to operate and sustain its own recycling collection facility while also promoting responsible disposal of waste throughout the Mentawai Islands. We recognise that education is at the heart of finding sustainable solutions to the islands’ current environmental issues. Therefore we also aim to promote education on environmental issues particularly plastic pollution and the increasing problem of plastic marine debris in our oceans, starting with the younger members of the population.

Happy New Year Everyone!!

Well end of 2016 saw us launch our new plastic waste recycling programme ‘Bank Sampah’ which is one of our biggest roles that we'll be focusing on this year.  We have been holding beach clean ups and explaining to the community what can and can’t be recycled. It has been really rewarding and encouraging to see young kids bringing us plastic waste, cleaning it and asking questions about our new programme.   We also took our plastic recycling programme, to the local High School to spread the word. With education at its core, getting young people involved is key for the sustainability of the programme. We had lots of fun with an interactive workshop which included a presentation, activities, games, videos and even a little skit!

Let’s hope this is just the start of something amazing!!

The school closed over the Christmas period so our full time teachers could take a well earned break, and the students got into the festive spirit donning their Santa hats for a bit of pre-festive fun!!

We are slowly progressing raising the funding to purchase land and building a new multi-purpose Education and Conservation Centre, so please help spread the love and share this giving circle to your network of friends, family, colleagues etc.

In September we had a load of books donated and delivered from family and friends of TPW, so the students now have their own little library and bookshelf which they absolutely love which they can practice their new English skills!!

Woohoo - Watch this space!!  Future world leaders, in the making!!  If Donald Trump can, these kids have a good chance!!
