Ngā Rangatahi Toa (NRT) is a Māori-led, not-for-profit organisation that engages with vulnerable Māori and Pasifika rangatahi from low socio-economic areas of Tāmaki Makaurau. We guide these rangatahi through a portfolio of projects that combine creative exploration with youth development strategies, housed within the indigenous framework of Te Ao Māori honoring and acknowledging Matauranga Māori. Our projects take the form of wānanga (learning camps), a flagship theatre project called Manawa Ora, fortnightly youth mentoring sessions, all within a whānau wrap-around support system. All of our projects are meaningfully connected to each other and scaffold rangatahi through a process of rangatiratanga (leadership), kotahitanga (connected - togetherness) and mauri (life force - wellbeing) to support our rangatahi to become thriving, active members of their whānau and their communities. Our Matariki exhibitions, annual theatre production, open workshops and presentations amplify the stories and voices of our young people. When these stories are shared there is a mutually beneficial and transformational exchange for both the young person and their audience, which consistently challenge the perceptions which further perpetuate barriers of inequity and enhance advocacy for advances for opportunity, accessibility and change for our young people.
