Huntington's WA (Inc)
About us
Huntington's Disease (HD) is a complicated disease that affects the body, mind and emotions. It is an inherited neurodegenerative disease which causes the progressive death of nerve cells in the brain resulting in a decline in mobility, speech and swallowing difficulties, as well as cognitive and emotional impairment. Symptoms typically appear between the ages of 30 and 50 with a decline over 10 to 25 years. There is currently no cure. A child of a parent with Huntington's is 50% at risk of inheriting the disease hence watching the decline of their parent knowing that this too could be their fate. Huntington's WA supports families in the Western Australian community by providing individual and group support, home visits, telephone counselling, education sessions, retreats and outings, parenting and mentoring programs and referrals to allied health services. These services rely on ongoing sponsorships, grants and donations to ensure professional specialised practitioners are available to support community members through the challenging journey they face. Your donation will make a real difference. Thank you.
