African Tails
About us
African Tails is a registered animal welfare organisation which rely on donations in order to focus on
the following:
Sterilisation and education:
We believe in being proactive instead of reactive. We believe that sterilization is the only way to combat the serious problem that we face with overpopulation of dogs and cats. The constant breeding of dogs and cats leads to abuse, neglect and so many dogs and cats without homes. On a yearly to biannual basis, we execute mass sterilisation campaigns in informal settlements or areas with little or no access to veterinary care. This takes lots of planning and fundraising in order to run a successful campaign. Every pet owner is always educated on the importance of sterilisation and responsible pet ownership. We rely purely on public donations in order to prevent cruelty and neglect through sterilisations as well as the treatments, living condition interventions, rehoming’s and education that goes hand in hand with the Sterilisation Campaigns and on a daily basis. Throughout the year, we offer pet Sterilisations at our office for the dog/cat owners that qualify for welfare rates. As much as funding allows, we also sponsor sterilisations for the pets from the local communities such as Brooklyn, Joe Slovo, Dunoon and surrounds.Rescue and Rehoming:
We have an adoptions department which focuses on adopting out the animals that are in our care. These animals get adopted out to homes that are suitable for each individual animal’s needs. There is an adoption process that needs to be followed as well as an adoption fee that covers some of the expenses such as vaccines, compulsory sterilisation etc. These animals have come to African Tails through being unwanted, found as strays, or rescued from unacceptable conditions. All of our rescued animals are in foster homes where we supply all the necessary food, medical care and anything that is needed until the animal is adopted. We rely on the public to sign up to foster dogs and cats as this is incredibly important for us to be able to rescue more animals.Treatments:
We have designated vets that offer us welfare rates. Our vet bills are a result that comes from a combination of animals that are just rescued, animals in our care, as well as animals that need urgent medical assistance in and around the local communities.Statistics:
Since African Tails started in 2006, we have sterilised over 16,000 animals. We have homed close to 2450 dogs and cats. We have fed around 13600 animals in need. We have provided close to 1000 kennels to dogs without shelter. We have organized and funded the medical treatment of around 4000 animals. All of this cannot continue without the support from the caring public
