Hands Across the Water (Hands) was founded in response to the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, marking 20 years this December. Our journey began with Peter Baines OAM, a NSW Police forensic investigator who led Australian and International teams in Thailand to identify the 5,395 bodies recovered. During his last rotation, Peter met a group of children who had lost their parents, inspiring him to raise funds and build a home for these vulnerable children.Today, Hands supports over 350 children across seven homes and projects in Thailand. These children find refuge with us due to three heart-wrenching circumstances: they have no family, their family cannot care for them, or they have been rescued from unsafe environments by the Police or Government. At Hands, we believe every child deserves a future filled with possibilities, opportunities, and dreams. Our mission is not just to provide sustenance, but to help children recognise and seize the opportunities before them.
