Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary is the largest parrot sanctuary in the Southeast with over 600 birds in residence. Each bird has either been rescued from a hoarding or abusive situation, or has been placed in the sanctuary because the owner can no longer care for it. Aviaries are large enough for even the largest macaws to fly, and the director/founder, Ces Erdman,, lives on site to provide daily care. Visitors visit by appointment to learn more about the birds and the practices of this sanctuary. Board members and other volunteers work on site and in the community to educate the public and assist with ongoing tasks. Owners who relinquish birds to the sanctuary pay fees to cover some of the costs of caring for these birds long term. Other funding comes from small grants and individual donors. Donations of food, construction supplies, and other expenses are accepted.
