About us
Bus Stop Films is an award-winning, disability-led not-for-profit social enterprise which has been in operation since 2009. With a primary focus on supporting people with disability and others from marginalised communities, we use film studies, filmmaking, and the film industry to change community attitudes globally around the rights and contributions of people with disability and other underrepresented groups.
With over 100 short films made, winning more than 120 awards and screening in festivals and on streaming services around the world reaching an audience of more than 45 million people we are a viable and dynamic creative organisation.
How do we achieve this?
We DELIVER
Our Accessible Filmmaking Program is taught by industry professionals with the assistance of dedicated disability‑support workers. Participants have the opportunity to learn all things filmmaking in some of Australia’s leading educational facilities and community centres.
The year‑long rolling program is based on our award‑winning Accessible Filmmaking Program curriculum and inclusive learning philosophy, which lets our participants shine and build many transformative life skills, including improved literacy, social and communication skills, increased confidence and work‑ready skills.
We CREATE
Our participants work with award-winning industry professionals to make incredible short films. These films are entered into Oscar-qualifying festivals worldwide, and participants travel to represent their work walking red carpets, introducing films, and speaking on industry panels. In recent years, participants have represented Bus Stop Films in the USA, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, and across Australia. Our work has been broadcast on ABC, Foxtel, and SBS.
We ADVOCATE
We campaign for greater representation of people with disability in the screen industry, both on and off screen, driving a more inclusive society.
Our dedicated business unit, Bus Stop Employment, supports our participants and others with disability into meaningful employment in the screen industry and beyond. We also work with production companies to source disabled cast and crew, and provide consultancy for inclusive employment practices in non-screen sectors.
To date, we’ve supported participants into over 1,000 workplace opportunities, including roles on TVCs, TV shows such as Neighbours, Survivor and MasterChef, and major feature films including Disney and Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
