Uncle in Byron Bay is a mentoring service, building one-on-one mentoring relationships and has men called ‘uncles’ who attend activities and give their time to interact, work, learn and play with boys aged 6 to 12 years old. Uncle organises a wide range of activities and events including camps, snorkelling, fishing, tennis, skateboarding, bike riding, climbing, beach soccer, rugby, cricket, surfing, discussion dinners, treasure hunts, board games and many others. There are a number of positive outcomes and benefits our services provide, not only to the boys and their families, but to the wider community. Specifically, research has shown that programs such as ours have reported measurable improvements in the following areas: • Increase in school retention • Decrease in drug use • Decrease in physical aggression • Increased scholastic competence • Greater employment opportunities • Lowered risk of incarceration The purpose of Uncle is to strengthen community by building resilient males with the ability to effectively relate to one another with honesty and integrity, which in effect ripples throughout the wider community in the long and short term.
