In Australia, almost 1 in 6 people experience hearing loss. The difficulties in communication resulting from hearing loss impact negatively on our social networks, our participation in social activities, and our mental health. Soundfair is a non-profit community organisation based in Melbourne, Victoria. Our vision is to create a fair world for people with hearing conditions, particularly the most vulnerable, through connection and participation. In order to shift society's narrative, our short-term goal is to create spaces for people with hearing conditions to share their lived experiences with others. Storytelling and story sharing are in and of themselves part of the therapeutic journey for people with hearing conditions, but they're also incredibly powerful strategies for decreasing stigma and increasing understanding (and therefore accessibility) for people living with hearing conditions. Soundfair’s Hearing Bank is an unfunded program and the only service of its kind in Victoria. It aims to overcome the social and emotional impacts of hearing conditions by providing hearing healthcare and devices to people who couldn’t otherwise afford them.
