SOS!SEN supports parents and carers navigating the complex landscape of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Our mission is to provide a comprehensive range of information, advice, signposting and support to empower parents to navigate the intricate legal and bureaucratic processes inherent in securing SEN support in schools. This is done through 1:1’s, EHCP (Education Healthcare Plan) checks, working documents, pre-action protocol letters (PAP), grounds of appeal and a helpline. Over 1.6 million children in the UK have SEN, with 13.6% having no EHCP. SOS!SEN supported 1265 families in 2023 to navigate the overwhelming legal system, supporting children back to education. In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, Amerdeep Somal, whose role is to investigate complaints about council services including Send, said: “The system is simply not working for children, families or local authorities. The money available is not sufficient to provide the services that children are entitled to.
