Rikki's Refuge was founded in 1998 to save the lives of animals that found themselves in a shelter system unable to give them a second chance for life. Animals who were elderly, or just older and not so cute anymore, or with behavioral issues, or chronic, yet manageable, health conditions, those with handicaps, and those just no longer wanted, and those who grew bigger, or just grew into adults of their species. Thru the help of kind and loving donors and volunteers, Rikki's Refuge has grown to now house almost 1300 animals every day. Every animal is promised a life of love, a home designed for their needs in a neighborhood designed especially for their species. Twenty species of domestic and farm animals call Rikki's Refuge home. They are provided with love, life-care, friends, food and medical care. They are happy! Some find adoptive homes over the years, but the older blind deaf three legged diabetic beagle, the cute calf who became a huge cow, the adorable itty bitty 4 pound baby miniature pig who grew to it's normal miniature adult size of 400 pounds, yup that's miniature compared to our 1200 pound farm pigs who are thankful not to have been eaten, the cat with fiv or a purrsonality disorder, Rikki's Refuge will be their home, their happiness, their family for all of their natural lives. In addition to caring for all these animals every second of every day, Rikki's Refuge has 350 acres of pristine natural woods and wetlands set aside for protection of wildlife, where rehabilitated and native animals of many species from tadpoles to black bears live in safety. Rikki's Refuge hosts many programs, both on and off site, teaching humane education, compassion, and kindness to the differently-abled, the elderly, those with chronic health issues, and to all of earth's beings and to Earth herself. Rikki's Refuge believes that there can never be too much kindness or compassion in this world.
