Fondée à Montréal en 1869, la Société pour la prévention de la cruauté envers les animaux (maintenant mieux connue sous l’appellation SPCA de Montréal) fut la première organisation vouée au bien-être animal au Canada. Nous ignorons comment elle est née exactement, mais l’histoire atteste le soutien de sociétés de défense des animaux de France, de l’Angleterre et des États-Unis. Au cours de sa première année d’existence, la SPCA a travaillé essentiellement à améliorer les conditions de vie des chevaux de trait, qui étaient alors présents sur toute l’île de Montréal. La SPCA s’est ensuite intéressée à d’autres enjeux, comme la gestion humanitaire des chiens, les combats de coqs et la mise à mort des oiseaux sauvages. La SPCA a parcouru un long chemin depuis sa fondation : elle est maintenant le plus grand organisme de protection des animaux au Québec, s’exprimant au nom des animaux partout où règnent l’ignorance, la cruauté, l’exploitation ou la négligence.

Founded in Montreal in 1869, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (now known simply as the Montreal SPCA) was the first animal-welfare organization in Canada. It is not known under whose influence the society was formed, but its history acknowledges assistance from animal-welfare societies in France, England and the United States. In its early years, the SPCA concentrated primarily on improving the treatment of work horses, which were used all across the island of Montreal. The SPCA later began working on additional issues, such as humane dog control, cock-fighting and the killing of wild birds. The SPCA has come a long way since its beginnings: today, it is the largest animal-protection organization in Quebec, speaking on behalf of animals wherever there is ignorance, cruelty, exploitation or neglect.
