Along the tree line in the outskirts of quiet Hillsborough, North Carolina, resides a small, one-story ranch home. With just 1,600 square feet, this tiny home functions and operates similarly to a government-funded wildlife sanctuary. Our Wild Neighbors has been open to the public and operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week since 2017. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Our Wild Neighbors Wildlife Rehabilitation Center receives no federal, state, or county funding. Instead, it relies solely on the generous donations of the community. With just one staff member, the organization is mainly run by dedicated and compassionate volunteers who understand the importance of what Our Wild Neighbors has to offer. The facility is one of the few surviving wildlife rehabilitation centers still operating in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The future dream of our facility is to open a real nature center with a rehabilitation and education building that will bring the understanding and protection of nature.
