About us
The mission of the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County is to improve community, family, and professional lives through adult literacy education. The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County, founded in 1987, is a 501c3 community-based adult education organization providing curriculum based programs such as adult basic education, English literacy instruction, High School Equivalency preparation, and US Citizenship tutoring. Our programs are taught by volunteer instructors with a wide variety of experience as professional educators.
According to a recent nationwide survey from the National Center for Education Statistics, approximately 154,000 Fort Bend County residents (19%)* function at or below Level 1 Literacy. So, what does this mean? It means that 154,000 adults living in Fort Bend County lack the reading and writing skills to manage daily living tasks that 81% of us accomplish every day. Since 2019, over 900 adults have been active in our GED, ESL, & US Citizenship Programs and over 80 volunteers have given over 3,000 hours of instruction, Also, 90% of our adult students are Fort Bend County residents and women make up approximately 80% of our student population.
