Everyone knows how wonderful it is to see a child smiling and having fun. KidsOut is known as the “Fun & Happiness Charity” because we provide positive opportunities and experiences to bring smiles to disadvantaged children and enhance their physical and mental wellbeing. Established in 1999, KidsOut has a small team of staff while utilising thousands of volunteers around the UK to achieve our core mission: to bring fun and happiness to some of the UK’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children. KidsOut provides its services all over the UK to over 70,000 children a year, mainly through the provision of fun days out and toy boxes for when they arrive in refuge. While KidsOut supports children from a range of backgrounds, it is the only national charity focusing on the needs of children in refuge and works with every Women’s Aid refuge in the UK. Annually, an average of 20,000 children in the UK flee domestic abuse to the safety of a Women’s refuge. Following comprehensive surveys and pilot studies conducted during the pandemic, KidsOut has two new initiatives to tackle food poverty for families arriving in refuge and the digital divide suffered by children living in refuge. At the moment we have our 2021 Giving Tree Appeal where we are asking people to buy a gift for children living in refuge. When children flee domestic abuse to the safety of a refuge, they arrive often with just the clothes on their back, having had to leave all their possessions behind. Christmas is an extremely tough time for families in refuge, both emotionally and financially, compounded by the fact that they are isolating away from family and friends. Many mothers will struggle to provide the essentials, let alone presents for their children. Our aim is to provide every child in refuge with a box of brand new toys to support their mental health and wellbeing and provide comfort at what is a very traumatic time for them.
