Amara's mission is to ensure that every child in foster care has the love and support of a committed family – as quickly as possible and for as long as each child needs. Our goal is to find the right family and home for each child, and for them to remain together or connected with their siblings as much as possible. Our organization has a history of meeting urgent needs as well as being thought leaders as we advocate embracing new approaches and solutions that provide a safe landing for children at critical times in their young lives. For instance, we were one of the first agencies in Washington to open fostering and adoption to LGBTQ parents, as well as single and/or transracial parents. We are a Recognized Innovator by the Human Rights Campaign since 2013, and continue to innovate in other areas such as implementing emergency sanctuary programs (King and Pierce Counties), and Project Search and Reunion, which reunites adopted children from the 1950's through 2000, with information and support they have requested. With the emergence of COVID-19 in our communities, we have quickly pivoted to arranging face-time on social media platforms between birth parents and their children who are in the care of foster parents. This has presented a unique set of challenges for our clinical staff, birth families, and foster families but puts the wants and needs of children first as they too experience the disruptions of COVID-19. Maintaining family contact is critical during these times when social distancing has been mandated. Now, more than ever, children experiencing foster care need and require our support as we navigate the uncertainty of this new landscape.
