Water Stewardship Asia Pacific
Water Stewardship Asia Pacific
At Water Stewardship Asia Pacific our vision is "Our Shared Water Future." WSAP was formed in response to the Millennium Drought and following a four-year global, multi-stakeholder development process, the first International Water Stewardship Standard (AWS Standard) was launched with the support of the United Nations CEO Water Mandate. Water stewardship promotes the responsible use of water that is: • Environmentally Sustainable: Maintains and improves biodiversity and ecological processes. • Socially Equitable: Recognizes basic human needs and ensures long-term benefits for local people and society. • Culturally Sensitive: Acknowledges the importance of freshwater to indigenous peoples and communities. • Economically Beneficial: Reduces corporate risk and ensures long-term water availability for diverse economic benefits. WSAP’s mission is to collaborate with major water users, governments, and communities to protect and enhance the sustainability of water resources. This is achieved through stakeholder inclusive processes that include site- and catchment-based actions that transform attitudes, values, and behaviours. Joint action amongst these groups is essential for sustainable development and water security. By fostering collaboration, water stewardship improves governance, resulting in greater resilience and better catchment outcomes. Our approach also promotes improvements in water quality, sanitation, hygiene, water balance, environmental values, cultural values, and social inclusion.
