Thousands of horses every day are shipped to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada. For many of these horses they have worked their lives to win money as racehorses, many have worked on Amish farms, many have worked on ranches. Some were show horses. Some were our pets and companions. Many, for no fault of their own, have been labeled as useless and have been dumped at horse auctions only to be bought by dealers and sold for their meat. These horses need and deserve a second chance. Most are still very useful and many have been re-trained for other careers. Sending a horse to slaughter is not a method of compassionate euthanasia. It is a cruel avenue of slow torture and death. Horses are packed onto semi-trucks and once they are shipped to a meat processor, they are hung upside down by chains with their throats slashed so as to drain the blood from the body. It is done while the horse is still alive as to empty the body faster of blood. I know this is a graphic description, but this is the truth as to how a horse will spend his last time on earth at a slaughter plant. There is no sugar coating this process.
