We are based in Coventry & Warwickshire and care for people aged 18 years and over who have a terminal condition which can no longer be cured. We have 3 hospices throughout the area and also provide care in people's homes; This is Brian’s Story… Brian Edden, aged 73, received end of life care at Myton. Brian had cirrhosis of the liver and was cared for at Warwick Myton Hospice from when he was admitted before Christmas until he sadly died at the end of January 2021. The day after the UK went into lockdown 3.0 Brian showed us some of the beautiful artwork he had displayed in his room at Myton and explained that his intention was to ‘cheer people up and bring people together’. When asked about his time at Myton Brian said it was “It is a very good place to be, I have been looked after exceptionally well and would personally recommend Myton to anyone who needs it. There are beautiful grounds and gardens, it is spotlessly clean, with good food and wonderful staff. It is lovely here, and whilst I am here for end of life care it can be the beginning of life too, it’s my home now.” During his time at Myton Brian continued to paint and spent many happy hours showing long-term family friend Sunita how to work with watercolours. Brian’s daughter Nicky said: “Myton is not just for patients but for families too. We slept in the wonderful family accommodation right next to the ward for a number of nights and every morning a nurse crept in with a cup of tea for when I woke up. The nurses are angels and we’ve had lots of laughs and jokes with them too.” We also support our patient's loved ones as well and have family support services for children and adults. All of our care is provided free of charge and this year it will cost just over £10 million to fund our care and 75% of this money is generated through voluntary income. As we continue to navigate our return to some sort of ‘normal’, with our shops now open and the hope of face to face fundraising events on the horizon, we will need time to build voluntary income back to pre- Covid 19 levels. Any money we don’t spend on recovery will be invested in developing and increasing our patient services and extending our reach. We are incredibly proud of our front line teams, despite working in a constant crisis situation for more than 12 months their commitment to providing the very best palliative and end of life care has not wavered. They have been faced with huge professional and personal challenges but they have pulled together more than ever to look after our patients, families and each other. Throughout the pandemic we had two main priorities; providing, as always, the best quality Palliative and End of Life care and ensuring that despite the difficulties presented by Covid 19 our patients and their loved ones could spend precious time together.
