The Australian Heart Lung Transplants Association (AHLTA) Cover Photo
The Australian Heart/Lung Transplant Association was founded as The Heart Transplant Club in 1984 by a small group of early heart transplant recipients at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia. It was an initiative of the late Victor Chang, basically as a support for patients and their families, to discuss transplantation, exchange ideas, and be there for each other. Over the years it has grown to include heart, lung and Heart/Lung transplant recipients from all over Australia and continues to be a great source of support and assistance for patients along their transplant journey. The association is run by volunteer transplant recipients and carers and receives no government funding. Fundraising activities include market stalls selling homemade goods, raffles and generous donations from the public. We connect our community through our Facebook and Instagram pages as we have members all over Australia. A few times a year we have social and community events to connect people face to face. We have a Financial Assistance Program which provides financial assistance for patients in need. We also maintain a home near St Vincent's Hospital so country patients can stay at a low cost residence in Sydney close to their doctors and therapists.
