Special Operations Radio Team
About us
SORT is a Rapid Response Communications Team that can be deployed to an area of interest in the event of catastrophic disaster or an event requiring immediate on-site emergency communication. Members of SORT is primarily made up of current and ex first responders. SORT utilizes public safety communications and Amateur Radio communications deployed in an expeditionary way. Our members are dedicated to support the mission at hand. SORT can leverage years of expertise in public safety and Amateur Radio emergency communications as needed in a communications support role. We also have deep knowledge of how to conduct search and rescue by ground/air as well as use 'drone' support.
To assist local law enforcement with missing children- persons, SORT deploys to the scene of an active missing child search or search and rescue event. SORT can assist law enforcement in dealing with an overwhelming outpouring of citizens seeking to aid in the search. SORT works as the liaison between law enforcement and volunteers, coordinating the effort to equip citizens with an incident command structure and provide non-law enforcement communications, as well as garnering evidence that can be passed on to law enforcement. SORT acts as relief/support for law enforcement agencies so they can focus more on the incident.
To be actively involved in reporting Realtime severe weather conditions, upcoming severe weather conditions and major traffic problems to our team of networked volunteers. SORT has National Weather Service trained weather spotters that can be deployed in the field for a "boots on the ground" survey of weather conditions. SORT acts as a clearing house of information about active or upcoming severe weather to our Field Offices so they can accurately relay information to the numerous communications channels such as Zello PTT, Southern Linc, and Amateur Radio. SORT can report weather spotter data to the National Weather Service via NWS Chat, radio, email, or phone calls.
SORT is actively engaged in Amateur Radio organizations and trains new radio operators to build a network across the state to provide emergency communications when asked to participate. SORT members participate as a" Ham Club" in different types of events that amateur radio offers such as Field Day Exercises, ham crams, road races, ham fest, etc.
