SEN Talk CIC is a London-based non-profit organisation dedicated to transforming social and emotional determinants of well-being and promoting societal inclusion at large for children and young people with social communication conditions. Currently supporting over 200 families with autistic children and children with an ADHD diagnosis through a number of vital services, SEN Talk ultimately aims to improve long-term social and emotional mental health and subsequently provide better outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs. SEND children are statistically more likely to develop mental health problems in later life due to societal exclusion in varying forms, and within the new reality of COVID-19, this statistic will only worsen unless drastic changes are made. Our service is placed well within the gap of provision and support for children and young people on the autistic spectrum and with ADHD and their families. As an organisation we have a rights-based approach, and aim to provide a unique space in which neurodiversity is celebrated rather than fought. Through the continuation of both our parent pastoral services and children’s activities, we will reduce the marginalisation of this vulnerable cohort by improving emotional resilience and highlighting the potential of children and young people with SEND. Generating these opportunities and allowing families to experience early positive intervention will reduce SEND adolescent and adult mental health issues, empower parents and support professionals within the wider community to accommodate the needs of children with social communication needs.
