As businesses, in-person support services, and even courts are forced to close their doors, RAINN’s work does not stop. With the current crisis leading to both a decline in donations and an increase in need from survivors in close quarters with a perpetrator, RAINN’s work remains essential. While RAINN’s operations are fully remote until further notice to protect our staff, we continue to operate the National Sexual Assault Hotline around-the-clock for survivors and their loved ones. Social distancing efforts to contain the coronavirus are vital to the health of our community, but many victims of intimate partner violence and child sexual abuse are now quarantined at home in unsafe situations. With widespread school closures, children experiencing abuse at home are now spending more time at home, often without access to support networks and mandatory reporting professionals such as teachers, coaches, and guidance counselors. RAINN is at the frontlines to provide critical safety planning, crisis intervention, and guidance regarding medical treatment and police reporting. And, at a time when media consumption has skyrocketed, RAINN continues to work with the entertainment industry and news outlets to increase public awareness and provide accurate information about sexual violence prevention, prosecution, and recovery.
