Making Waves Foundation
About us
Making Waves Foundation, formerly known as Sailors with disABILITIES, works with young
people aged 12-18 living with disability, disadvantage, and disengagement through
our programs. We aim to be a more societal inclusive organisation by encouraging our
participants to meet and beat the challenges they face in their lives and in-so-doing
challenging how society perceives what might be possible.
OUR MISSION
To provide inclusive and unique sailing experiences with skilled volunteers and staff that:
• challenge and support disabled or disadvantaged people to explore their potential and
to facilitate an optimistic and positive mindset; and
• raise awareness in society to change the attitude to disabled or disadvantaged people.
OUR VALUES
Making a Difference- We have a passion for improving the lives of the disabled and the
disadvantaged.
Safety -We place the safety of our teams and program participants at the core of everything
we do.
Quality -We strive to deliver high standards of performance in all aspects of our work.
Integrity -We have an absolute and unwavering commitment to operate in a manner that is
ethical,
trustworthy, respectful and responsible.
Collaboration - We take a collaborative approach that values input from our volunteers,
program participants, partners, donors and the communities in which we operate.
Innovation -We actively seek, develop and implement new ways of undertaking and funding
our service offerings.
OUR VISION
An Australia which embraces disabled or disadvantaged people, so they feel optimistic
about their lives
and are recognised by society as equals.
We aim to improve the lives of disabled and disadvantaged people through our sailing
programs. By developing their confidence and team skills, we help people meet life’s
challenges with determination and optimism.
Young people in these situations are at risk of not succeeding in education, training or
employment. We offer an alternative education platform, so that they can re-engage, find
their voice, and become positive contributing members of society.
Our programs have tangible goals of short-to-medium-term holistic health outcomes in the
lives of our participants:
SOCIAL HEALTH: To increase capacity for positive relations with other people
EMOTIONAL HEALTH: To boost resilience to life's challenges and hardships
MENTAL HEALTH: To improve understanding of oneself and others
PHYSICAL HEALTH: To foster participation in sport and physical activity
