Since 1985, Hope Harbor, formerly known as Laurel House, has filled a significant gap in California as the only long-term (12-18 months) preventative residential care program for teens, ages 12-17, who are at risk of homelessness, criminalization, or human trafficking. Hope Harbor is the only program that provides live-in house parents, compared to a shift rotation of staff. While other shelters focus on providing emergency crisis shelter to teens, Hope Harbor focuses on providing long-term care, including access to health care, preventive care for chronic diseases and obesity, mental health care, substance use treatment, and a high-quality education for homeless and at-risk teens. Services include long-term shelter, daily nutritious meals and snacks, live-in case management, medical, dental, optical, and mental health care, weekly individual and family counseling, crisis counseling, STEAM education, college readiness, individualized tutoring, music and art therapy, nutrition education, physical fitness, and life skills training. Hope Harbor aims to serve children ages 12-17 at risk of running away, homelessness, criminalization, or human trafficking. Teens referred to our program often come from backgrounds marked by substance abuse, mental health issues, abuse, bullying, eating disorders, self-inflicted mutilation, and even suicidal thoughts. Of the teens we serve, 100% come from low-to-moderate-income households and have limited resources for food, care, education, counseling, and mental health therapy.
