Kate’s Rest Foundation is a registered charity in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada that provides permanent supportive housing to men, women and children who are homeless.  Once they have had time to decompress from their experiences that brought them to our door we help them self-identify the social, health, legal, education and dental services that they might need, and then to help them to access the respective agencies to answer those needs.  We mentor self-advocacy and when they still are challenged, with their permission and with them by our side, we will advocate on their behalf.  We are mandated to provide traiing and education as well as to help alleviate poverty.  To that end we are now launching a social enterprise whereby our friends that we share life with here at Kate’s Rest may be able to engage in a small farm business that they will own and which will support them sufficiently that within five years they will own their own 1000 sq ft home.  We have chosen aquaponic farming within a climate-controlled environment to grow baby spinach, mixed greens and kale.  This will reduce our dependency on imported vegetables during our Canadian winters.  After eighteen years of service Kate’s Rest Foundation is embarking on creating healthy, supportive farming communities for those in need, and others who wish to collaborate with our goals.
