This season the Utah Avalanche Center is celebrating 40 years of keeping people on top of the Greatest Snow On Earth! Our team of professional avalanche forecasters and educators fulfill the UAC mission of saving lives by providing avalanche forecasting, education, and awareness throughout the state of Utah in collaboration with the US Forest Service. Although the UAC existed in some capacity in years prior, the winter of 1980/81 was the first official year of the UAC (UAFC). During that season there were 30,736 calls to the hotline. A lot has changed since then. In contrast, last winter we issued 1,300 forecasts that were accessed 3 million times via the website, hotline, email, and mobile app. We taught 151 classes or presentations to 6,882 people (55% were under 18). We made 242 videos that were viewed 2.1 million times. We need your help to make our free and affordable programs a reality as we navigate the challenges coming as our backcountry community recreates during the COVID-19 pandemic. About 2/3 of our funding comes from donations, grants, and benefit events.
