Detroit Hives is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for both people and pollinators by transforming Detroit’s blighted vacant lots into vibrant, sustainable green spaces. Since our founding in 2016, we’ve grown to more than 37 active locations, partnering with community residents, schools, organizations, and businesses to create measurable social, environmental, and economic impact in historically underserved neighborhoods.

Through our flagship programs — Bee The Change and Bee In Motion — we’re cultivating the next generation of environmental leaders by teaching the importance of pollinator conservation while promoting mental health, wellness, and mobility through nature-based engagement.

Our nationally recognized urban beekeeping model has inspired replication beyond Detroit, expanding to Kansas City, Missouri as MO Hives, and leading to the establishment of National Urban Beekeeping Day. Most recently, we proudly partnered with the Detroit City Council to pass a landmark resolution officially designating Detroit as the 207th certified Bee City USA affiliate, reaffirming our city’s commitment to pollinator protection, sustainability, and community resilience.
