The “orphan crisis” is dramatically misunderstood globally and in Haiti in particular. Of the 32,000 children who live in orphanages in Haiti, 80% of them have families. The main reason children with families end up in orphanages is poverty. The true orphan crisis is that sons and daughters are being separated from their families and made into orphans. Research supports and scripture confirms that children belong in families. Haiti has 750 orphanages, perpetuating the crisis. Child Hope International is on the leading edge of a movement to do orphan care differently. We are prioritizing family-based care over institutional care.
