About us

We provide wrap around services to ensure people who are blind or who have low vision can live their lives to the full. We support them, provide specific rehabilitation to mitigate their vision loss with tools and technology, ensure they can regain mobility and help people come to terms with vision loss. Through using tactile clues to get around and learning to use a white cane they learn to navigate their environment and the community and, if their lifestyle allows, they are keen and can manage it, they can be matched with a fully trained guide dog. We provide training and support for people to be able to continue doing their daily chores and manage their personal care. Our recreation and community advisors provide people with support to participate in activities of their choosing, arrange group physical and cultural activities that are tailored to ensure meaningful participation, and events for people to be stimulated, active and contributing members of the community. The journey to getting a guide dog requires many specialist hours to make sure people can function independently and are capable of being part of a "guide dog team". Without our highly tailored and specialised services and support, people lose their ability to manage their lives, become increasingly dependent and often withdraw, carrying with it a huge risk of isolation and depression. People's lives become increasingly narrow and although they now have much more time on their hands there are increasingly fewer activities they can still participate in. Our talking book library is a godsend that provides many hours of stimulation when people can no longer read books in print. While we have expanded our reach by opening up our services to people who still have vision but who are losing their eyesight, and trying to raise awareness so that those who could benefit from our services know what we can do to help them, our services are now under significant pressure. However with the generous support of donors we know we can make a huge difference by providing people have the services and support they need to be able to adapt to their vision loss, using residual vision to enhance their learning and maintain a positive outlook on their future.
