Big House Books

Big House Books (BHB) is a Jackson-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded in 2015 by educators, librarians, and advocates, addressing the intersecting crises of mass incarceration, systemic poverty, and poor education in Mississippi. Mississippi has the highest incarceration rate in the U.S., with over 1,020 people imprisoned per 100,000 residents. Access to books in correctional facilities is often denied or restricted, leaving most incarcerated individuals without adequate resources for self-directed learning. BHB mails free, donated paperback books to incarcerated individuals housed in over 100 correctional facilities across the state. The organization has grown significantly, now receiving over 200 letters weekly and mailing more than 20,000 books to incarcerated people in 2024 alone. An entirely volunteer organization, BHB relies on a diverse base of supporters to process book shipments each week. Operational costs, particularly mailing expenses averaging $4,500 per month, continue to rise despite a dedicated volunteer base and low administrative overhead. BHB seeks general operational support from supporters to continue improving access to reading materials and fostering a compassionate volunteer community that believes in second chances and the transformative power of reading.
