Avery's Hope raises money and awareness for rare pediatric GI patient families facing the financial challenges of out-of-pocket and insurance denied expenses. The world is painfully unaware that families "living rare" have expenses and burdens well beyond the medical. Often parents lose jobs, insurance, homes and a great deal of self dignity on their rare disease journey. Due to the burden of rare disease, Avery's Hope started the HOPE Fund for Families for the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Our organization also adds to existing patient assistance programs at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Texas Children's Hospital. This year, 2020, thanks to a grant from Global Genes, Avery's Hope was able to assist individual pediatric rare GI patient families facing financial difficulties due to the complications of COVID-19 on top of their rare disease situation.
