WAY Widowed and Young is the only national charity in the UK for men and women aged 50 or under when their partner died. Founded in Cardiff in 1997, the charity provides vital support to young, widowed people – married or not, with or without children, inclusive of sexual orientation, gender, race and religion – as they adjust to life after the death of their partner. Losing a life partner is one of the most traumatic things that can ever happen to anyone. Young widows are more likely to suffer depression, anxiety inc. PTSD suicidal thoughts, intense grief due to their partners death most likely unexpected or violent. WAY has over 4700 members and offers a unique peer-to-peer support network to anyone who’s been widowed at a young age. At a local level, WAY is run by a network of 150 volunteers spread out across the UK who have all been widowed themselves, so they understand how it feels. WAY also provide access to counselling, legal and financial advice. 80% of members report that WAY has enabled them to better able to cope with their grief WAY receives no statutory funding and generates its income through member fees, trusts, foundations and the generosity of donors.
