1 in 3 children are starting school without the literacy skills they need to by ready for school to read,learn and succeed, in areas in SA. Imagine a 5 year old child starting school not knowing how to spell their own name, not knowing the basic ABC's and in the worse cases not knowing what a book is. This is the reality of what is happening today. United Way SA hold the only licence in Australia to be able to distribute The Imagination Library.The program seeks to improve the reading skills of children in the most disadvantaged communities to help prepare them for starting school strong. The Imagination Library provides a new, quality, age appropriate book each month, delivered to the home, addressed to the child. Also in the pack is a reading guide for parents/carers to help engage the child with books and reading and also provides activities related to the book. We currently have over 600 families with children aged 0 to 5 years old on the program and our waiting list is growing. With limited funding we need the help of the community to be able to provide more families with books every month.
