Understory Alliance creates living forest gardens in community spaces, designed to feed people, strengthen ecosystems, and keep cultural knowledge alive. These gardens are planted with native trees, shrubs, and food plants, arranged in layered systems that care for themselves much like a healthy forest. They provide free, fresh food for anyone to harvest, shelter native birds and pollinators, cool neighborhoods, and build healthier soils.Our projects benefit everyone, whether or not they can join workdays. We know many people are already stretched thin. By making fresh food and the benefits of green, healthy spaces freely available, we help lighten that load. When people are better fed and surrounded by thriving ecosystems, the whole community grows stronger.We design, plant, and teach alongside our community so the benefits reach far beyond the garden. From school workshops to hands-on volunteer days, we connect people of all ages to plants and place.
