The Greater Moncton SPCA is Atlantic Canada's largest animal shelter, taking in more than 3,000 animals each year. Our Mission Statement To promote animal care and prevent animal cruelty through sheltering, placement, and education. Our History The Greater Moncton Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was formed in 1955 by a small group of concerned citizens (headed by Mrs. Constance Hoover), who thought something should be done about the stray animals and cruelty towards animals in this area. The following year, SPCA (Moncton) Inc. was founded and built by Mrs. Hoover and her mother. For years, Mrs. Hoover ran the SPCA with help from close friends, primarily Mr. and Mrs. Sternbach, and Mrs. Rena Michahelles. In its infancy, the work was done on a volunteer basis. As funds became available, staff was put in place to run the shelter. The Greater Moncton SPCA continues to work tirelessly on behalf of the animals in our region with the aim of preventing animal cruelty from blatant physical abuse to neglect. The Greater Moncton SPCA is the largest animal shelter in Atlantic Canada taking in over 3,000 animals every year. Hoover Animal Shelter. Today, the GMSPCA delivers service under the provincial Animal Protection Act, which is not duplicated by any other agency in the Greater Moncton area.
