30 Years on the Line: The UK’s Only General Dermatology Helpline Fights On

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Skinship UK, the UK’s only general dermatology helpline, founded by cancer survivor, advocate, and former BBC documentary-maker, Ashley Medicks.

Ashley was diagnosed with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (mycosis fungoides) in 1970. In 1995, he created the groundbreaking BBC documentary Scratching the Surface, which exposed the widespread neglect of skin disease and its devastating emotional toll. Two and a half million viewers, tuned in! Among its shocking findings: UK medical students receive less than two weeks of dermatology training in their entire five-year degree. Waiting times for dermatology referrals remain among the longest in the NHS.

Inspired to act, Ashley founded Skinship UK in 1996 as a registered charity, with patrons including comedian and author Ben Elton and BBC Radio 4's Dr Mark Porter.

For nearly three decades, Ashley has run the helpline single-handedly, entirely on a voluntary basis. Calls come from people living with a wide range of skin conditions—psoriasis, eczema, acne, vitiligo, hidradenitis, and more. Many callers have never before shared their struggles. Some report misdiagnoses of skin cancer. Others speak of social stigma, anxiety, and—among young people—the trauma of cyberbullying targeting visible skin issues.

“People often tell me things they’ve never told anyone before,” says Ashley. “It’s a privilege to listen, help, and support them. But the system is still failing far too many.”

Despite winning two national charity awards, Skinship UK receives no government funding. For its first ten years, Ashley personally funded all operating costs. Today, the charity survives through small donations—most unsolicited.

As Skinship UK enters its 30th year, the need is greater than ever. The charity continues to campaign for improved dermatology education and better patient outcomes, while offering a confidential, compassionate ear to those in crisis.
