Ruthless Kindness eliminates the preventable suffering of people and animals through access to care programs and the human animal bond. Based in Sonoma County in Northern California, Ruthless Kindness is a 501c3 nonprofit founded by veterinarians. More than a third of women in California experience domestic violence, and half won't leave if they can't bring their pets with them. Ruthless Kindness partners with victim and human service providers to make sure that people and pets who are going through a crisis are supported. Services include free mobile veterinary care, pet foster and boarding, pet food and supplies, assistance with adding pets to protective orders, and an empathy education program for youth exposed to violence at home to heal with the assistance of rescue animals. Only 15% of domestic violence safe houses are pet-friendly, so temporary pet foster and boarding is a huge component of what we do. We utilize a mobile veterinary unit to meet clients where they are, and ensure that we remove as many barriers as possible for those experiencing a crisis.
