Project CAR provides free, reliable, volunteer-driven transportation for these individuals. The program is intentionally designed with limited barriers and no application process and no income verification, ensuring that individuals can access needed care without navigating complex systems of data collection or document submission, incurring additional costs, or risking denial during moments of vulnerability. By removing transportation as an obstacle, the program supports timely access to preventive care, chronic disease management (such as dialysis), short-term therapies, life-saving cancer treatment, and follow-up care for surgeries and wounds. It reduces missed appointments and promotes continuity of care for both clinicians and patients.

Central to the Health Care Rides program is a relationship-based model that prioritizes dignity and trust. Volunteer drivers are trained to offer respectful, dependable service, recognizing that transportation is not merely logistical, but deeply connected to a person’s sense of independence and belonging. Over time, consistent and compassionate presence helps reduce isolation and anxiety for riders, particularly those managing aging, disability, or long-term health conditions.
