About us

Every 24 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In Oregon and Washington combined, there are

approximately 800 new cases yearly. These women are our mothers, sisters, wives, and friends. Ovarian cancer

is the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers and the fifth leading cause of cancer among women. A staggering

85% of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer are identified in stages III and IV, and only 46% of these women

live beyond five years. Most cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, resulting in poor outcomes. Existing

screening tests have low predictive value, exacerbating the issue. Comprehensive gynecological evaluations,

along with transvaginal ultrasounds and laboratory markers such as the cancer antigen-125 (CA-125) assay,

have shown no significant benefit in reducing morbidity or mortality associated with this cancer.

The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Oregon & Southwest Washington (OCAOSW) aims to promote awareness and

education about ovarian cancer, support those diagnosed and survivors, and advocate for public policy and

funding. OCAOSW offers direct program services to ovarian cancer patients, including the Here4You Financial

Assistance Program, which helps patients undergoing treatment pay for essential expenses like

rent, heating, and medication. We execute the Survivors Teaching Students Program, designed to educate

healthcare students about survivors’ personal journeys and how they can better assist in

care as they enter their professions. Other services include By Your Side curated chemotherapy care kits,

trained peer support for newly diagnosed individuals or those facing a recurrence, educational sessions,

fellowship events, monthly support groups, and the Trust Your Gut ovarian cancer symptom awareness

campaign, which aims to educate the public.

OCAOSW is the only nonprofit in the region providing direct program services to ovarian cancer patients and survivors.
