Our organization is a registered charity and serves Edmonton and the surrounding community. We are called Out of Africa Animal Sanctuary, as the founders immigrated from South Africa. We currently have approximately 100 animals in our care. They have come to us for various reasons including animals that were previously neglected, headed to slaughter and anonymously dropped at our gates. Our aim is to not only offer sanctuary and rehabilitation to these vulnerable animals but to also educate and support youth. We provide the opportunity for our youth to learn through animals and to experience the sanctuary regardless of age, ability and background. We focus on teaching compassion for all living creatures which we effectively accomplish through a wide variety of farm activities, animal care and volunteer opportunities. 

We rely completely on dedicated volunteers and donations. COVID has been extremely difficult for us because under normal circumstances we encourage anyone to visit and many of our visitors kindly bring donations. Unfortunately, we currently cannot have visitors. Fundraising is difficult in the best of times but now it is particularly strenuous. We use funds for food, veterinary costs and maintenance. We dream that one day we are able to build a large barn to house all of the animals of which 39 are horses. The recent cold weather illustrates the need for this barn even more.
